Carbon fibers which have relatively low tensile strength and modulus, around 1000 MPa and 100 GPa, respectively, are classified into general-purpose grade (GP-grade). Isotropic-pitch-based and some PAN-based carbon fibers belong to this grade and are used in applications that benefit from their low weight and bulkiness, e.g. thermal insulation for a high-temperature furnace. A recent, novel application of these GP-grade carbon fibers is in cement reinforcement.
Carbon fibers with higher strength and modulus than GP-grade are called high-performance grade (HP-grade), which are further classified into high-strength type (HT type) and high-modulus type (HM type). Most PAN-based carbon fibers produced in industry are HT type, and mesophase-pitch-based carbon fibers which are produced through spinning of anisotropic pitches are HM type. In the production of PAN-based carbon fibers, great effort has been paid to obtain a high modulus and some of them could have a relatively high modulus. In contrast, in mesophase-pitch-based carbon fibers, the aim is to achieve a high strength; some commercialized fibers have a relatively high strength. Detailed scientific aspects of carbon fibers, particularly PAN-based fibers.
In the present chapter, an overview of the production, structure and properties related to applications of carbon fibers will be presented. Therefore, no emphasis of precursors for these carbon fibers was afforded, although production and structure were discussed on the basis of precursors, because they governed strongly both the production procedure and the resultant structure of carbon fibers.
